Ash Wednesday

Hello again! Since yesterday was Mardi Gras (”Fat Tuesday”), that can only mean one thing. Today is the celebration of Ash Wednesday.

Ash Wednesday is a holiday in the Catholic Church that starts off the season of Lent. Pope Benedict XVI addressed the Church in Rome explaining how Lent is an opportunity “to rediscover the gift of faith we received at Baptism.” Lent is the liturgical season which lasts from Ash Wednesday until Holy Saturday (the day before Easter).

The imposition of ashes, the Pope said, is an important reminder of man’s weakness– a particularly important message for a society that makes no room for religious belief. “When he proclaims his complete autonomy from God, modern man becomes self-enslaved, and often finds himself tormented and alone,” the Pontiff observed. During Lent, he said, the faithful feel “an encouragement to return to the arms of God the tender and merciful Father.”

Penance and prayer can lead to true and lasting happiness, the Pope continued– unlike “achievement of success, desire for prestige and pursuit of luxury.” He explained that while earthly gains provide only partial and temporary satisfaction, “the only joy that fills the human heart is the joy that comes from God.”

As aforementioned, the priest anoints the members of the Church with blessed ashes on the forehead during the service. The ashes are placed on the forehead in the sign of the cross, but as you can see below, mine kind of got smeared. Oh well.

Kevin Renfrow - Ash Wednesday

Other than Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent, this week has been fairly calm and quiet thus far. I took the first “major quiz” of the semester in my physics class this morning and I have Chem lab this afternoon. One thing that I forgot to mention earlier was that I decided to switch to the 8 meal plan. This last weekend, Erin and I went to the store and got a bunch of food to last us a while. While we were out-and-about, I also picked up another shelving unit to store the dry food in.

New shelving

Well, that’s it for now. I have to run off to Chem lab.

Midwinter Luau

Yikes. How does time fly. It’s been wayyy too long since I’ve posted an entry. Why, with all the homework, late nights, homework, classes, and homework, there’s not much time left for friends and sleep. I’m back for now and I’ll try to post a little more frequently in the future.

Now, to the Luau!

Luau 1

L-R: Allison Wynn, Bri Krumweide, Brendan Smith, and Erin Partlan. (I’m taking the picture)

Notice the sweet moves we’re all rolling. Oh yeah! These were all taken at around 8:40 PM with a flash, so it was actually just lit by the paper lanterns overhead.

Tiki Man

Don’t forget about the Tiki man! His eyes are LEDs that light up at night. It’s pretty sweet!

The luau was amazing! Good times, Beach Boys playing… yep. Definitely a nice break from the standard routine of classes and homework! Next time we’re going to get more people involved. There’s even talk of setting up a smoothie bar for Atwood dorm sometime in the future as part of a way that the Christian fellowship members of Atwood can minister to our dorm.

Anyways, the weather’s looking great for Fat Tuesday!

HMC morning

Photo from our porch this morning. No clouds in the sky - only the warm sun. Hard to believe it’s mid-winter. =P

That’s it for now. Maybe I’ll be crazy and post again this afternoon…

Rain…in Southern California?

Wow. A crazy thing’s been happening the last couple of days. There appears to be a leak in the sky! It’s actually been raining down here in the LA area. In fact, the forecast is calling for rain all the way through next Monday (I’m not sure how much though). I’ve already been blamed for bringing down the bad weather with me. Maybe it’s true… but even so, the 48 °F right now is much warmer than the 30 °F up in Toledo, OR.

Just think, despite the storms, above the clouds lie a beautiful sunny day.

Above the clouds

Ignoring the weather for the moment, today was my second day of classes for Spring semester. It was also my first day of many 8:00 AM classes to come. I started the day off with Chemistry where we reviewed thermodynamics. My teacher, Professor Karukstis, did a great job covering the material and was very well organized. She has a tablet PC which she uses to write and display the notes on a projector. She is even kind enough to create PDFs of the notes and distribute them on the Sakai website after class. I will have her module of Chemistry for the first third of the semester before rotating to other subjects and professors.

My second class was Differential Equations with Professor dePillis. Her personality reminds me a lot of a teacher I had back at Isaac Newton Magnet School in 7th and 8th grade. There are a lot of interesting people in the class. Take, for example, Arthur and Wynn. If it wasn’t for today’s class I would not have known that combined they are capable of drinking orange juice out of a giant vat at a rate of 200 gallons an hour. On a more serious note, I am relived to find out that I actually have worked with differential equations already. Back in calculus we solved a few problems involving expanding spheres and other containers of whose volumes were changing over time. Those examples were indeed models of differential equations.

Next came my awkward hour break between my morning classes on Mondays and Wednesdays. On a more generic week-by-week basis, I’m not sure what I will utilize that time for, but today I went to the financial registration held in the Platt campus center. It’s a really easy process that basically involves simply verifying your account information and making sure you are paid-up with your bills so that you can be officially enrolled. Oh, and if you don’t stop by financial registration, they’ll slap a $250 fine on you - in case you needed extra motivation to attend.

My last class of the day was Physics. This semester in Physics we are studying classical mechanics, so we’re back to clocks that stay synchronized, lengths that don’t dilate, and, for the most part, more easily measurable applications of Physics. Though the topics should be more intuitive, the subject also dominates my schedule for this semester. Every day except Friday I have either Physics lecture, recitation, or lab. In fact, we’ve already completed and turned in a homework assignment for the class in addition to an in-class diagnostic quiz. I really like my recitation professor though. Professor Lyzenga is also the current professor lecturing at our Tuesday and Thursday gatherings.

I spent this afternoon kind of relaxed. I read about 60 pages for my Religion and Science class at CMC tomorrow, but other than that just did a little organizing around the room. The rest of the evening I’ll probably try to get a chunk, at least, of the math homework due Friday afternoon out of the way and socialize a bit with friends. I still haven’t unpacked my suitcase or duffel-bag completely, but meh. Plenty of time for that later.

That’s it for now.

Where’d the time go?

Ah! So I was planning to post earlier today, but the time seemed to just fly right by. I’ll keep this message short since I’m headed to bed and have an 8:00 AM class tomorrow.

Once I got out of Oakland an hour and some late, it was smooth sailing. I made it school fine and had my first classes today: Physics lecture and my Religion and Science Humanities class at Claremont McKenna College. I’ll try to get some of the pictures I took from the travel up on the blog tomorrow.

Here’s a picture of what my normal week will look like this semester.

schedule - spring 08

Well, that’s all the time I have for tonight. I’ll post again tomorrow afternoon.

Goals for the break

Alright, so the ‘endless’ amount of time I thought I had back at home for Christmas is quickly dwindling away. It appears that it has already been nearly three weeks since I flew up from Ontario and left the Harvey Mudd lifestyle behind for a while. In less than two weeks I will be boarding a flight headed straight back down to Southern California and will jump back into the Mudd culture.

To make the most of my remaining time in Oregon, I’m writing down my main goals for the entire break (some of which have already been achieved). I’ll go back and update this page as I complete goals (strike-through) and may add some more along the way.

  • Find gifts for my friends at college
  • Go to the beach and gather a few shells and sand
  • Take pictures of the Newport area (bridge, beach, Yaquina Head)
  • Write thank-you letters for scholarships and Christmas gifts
  • Finish website for Elizabeth (pending meeting)
  • Complete Half-Life 2 and Portal
  • Visit the High School and talk about Harvey Mudd (Thursday Jan 16)
  • Look for scholarships and investigate plans for summer
  • Pre-order as many books needed for Spring semester as possible so they arrive the first week of classes
  • Have a game night with family
  • Copy CDs at home to my computer
  • Fix weather station and connect to web

That’s all I can think of for now. Hope everything is going well with you all!
